Picture Perfect – Featured in Family First

I was delighted when Bashie Lisker asked me to collaborate with her on a couple of women’s-health-related articles for Mishpacha Magazine. Our piece on ultrasounds finally made it to print in Family First last month. ❤ (Though I must confess it’s the other article which truly holds a special place in my heart – stay tuned!)

Hope you find Picture Perfect an enjoyable and informative read. 🙂

Attention ladies who live in Israel:
There was one Israel-specific point that got cut because the majority of readers live in North America. I’m too passionate about education to just let that go, so I’m including my “follow up” below –

In the United States, there is only one anatomy scan offered, generally between weeks 18-22. In Israel, there are two anatomy scans, an earlier scan at 14-16 weeks, and a later scan at 20-24 weeks. This can be very confusing for American transplants to Israel! If a woman plans to do only one scan, the later scan allows for a more detailed look at the baby’s heart and other organs and is probably the most critical. However, it’s worth mentioning that the earlier scan can still provide useful information, most clearly in the case of spina bifida, where an early diagnosis allows for surgery in-utero around 23-25 weeks to repair the spinal cord and prevent disability after birth.
